Bali Sustainable Seafood is helmed by Hema Sitorus, our passionate leader, who sees Indonesia’s rich maritime heritage as a legacy that should be preserved.
Our founder began her journey in North Sumatra, where she was born and raised in Porsea. After attending Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata in Surabaya, Hema gained a variety of experiences through her jobs, including working in the hospitality industry, a pearl store, and finally at a Tuna industry in Eastern Indonesia, where the company exported tuna to the global market. It was during this time that she collaborated with NGOs on the sustainability programs.
In 2017, Hema was inspired by her work to go beyond and join the industry herself, realizing that Indonesia is one of the biggest seafood exporters in the world. This inspired her to raise public awareness of the high quality of seafood found in our own waters.
Thus began the early concept of what would now be known as Bali Sustainable Seafood, a dedicated organization that aims to promote not only local seafood but also sustainable fishing practices in local communities.
Since then, Hema has received prestigious accolades for her commitment to creating sustainable change in the seafood industry, including a recognition from World Wildlife Foundation Indonesia (WWF), International Visitors Leadership Programs (IVLP), and Disciples of Escoffier.
Within seven years, Bali Sustainable Seafood has experienced exponential growth. Our team has grown from only 2 employees, into a group of 40 dedicated members! With a family of like-spirited individuals, we continue to work together to meticulously curate sustainable products for our loyal customers.
Bali Sustainable Seafood is also honoured to have been trusted to partner with 5-star hotels, cafes, restaurants, and retails, providing high-quality seafood products for a local market inside, and outside of Bali.
